Advent 1 - The Incarnation is Astounding
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. -John 1:14a
Welcome to DAY ONE of GOD WITH US!
One Canadian pastor that I’ve appreciated for many years is ROBBIE SYMONS. He founded Hope Bible Chapel in Oakville, Ontario. I was interested when I saw he just released this new book, God With Us - 25 Advent Devotionals on the Glory of the Incarnation.
What an AMAZING and GLORIOUS TRUTH to EXPLORE and REFLECT ON this Christmas season!
It’s a good idea I think to ask ourselves- HOW IMPORTANT is Christmas to our walk with Jesus?
I’ve often thought that EASTER is the most important time of the year for Christians- as the Apostle Paul writes- “if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.” How true this is—but as the back of this book indicates—“there is no Good Friday or Easter Sunday apart from the INCARNATION. The incarnation is the INITIATION of God’s eternal rescue plan. It is an astonishing act of humility where the infinite God takes on FINITE HUMAN FLESH and chooses to leave pre-incarnate glory.”
And so may we see more VIVIDLY the LIGHT of Christmas. May we truly FEEL the love of Christmas. May we be STAGGERED by the HUMILITY of Christ our LORD!
The incarnation, by definition, is the act of God the Son whereby He took to Himself a human nature. The root of the word “Incarnation” is Latin for THE ACT OF BEING MADE FLESH. One of the most explicit expressions in Scripture of this truth is John 1:14: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
Consider the fact that this is the Eternal God (John 1:2), the Creator of all things (John 1:3), the very Source of Life (John 1:4), the Light of Men (John 1:4). It was this Word of God, the Son of God, the eternal omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, transcendent and infinite God who chose to take on flesh. The God of all eternity stepped down, entered into time, and became one of us. “The Word became flesh.”
On this first day of December, let’s STOP and take a deep spiritual breath from John 1:14. Let’s ALLOW this truth to PERMEATE OUR SOUL.
And who would’ve dreamed or ever forseen that we could hold God in our hand.
